David Murray

I was lucky enough to see the Californian tenorman David Murray play with his trio at the Union Chapel in London sometime back in the 90s. I remember it well as it followed a gig from Jackie McLean a few weeks earlier that ranks up there with one of the most disapointing shows I've ever been to. Murray on the other hand was on fire, a big, burly playful giant of a player whose 'free' sensabilities were right to the fore. The drummer, who I now can't recall, played a lot of the set away from his kit and instead played on the pulpit and around the chapel halls. It was something else, it really was. Here Phil Freeman takes a look at Murray's upcoming new album, his first for Impulse Records, which is on pre-order now on the site.
