Stereolab - Instant Holograms On Metal Film (2LP CLEAR)
Back in the day when I went to about a million gigs a week, Stereolab emerged onto the North London scene like some kind of Indie Sun Ra - Exotic, experimental, a band seemingly driven by some off kilter, avant pop muse. I saw them a few times back then and was always taken by both their simplicity and yet mesmeric and immersive dedication to their music. They went on to chart their own esoteric journey over the years mostly full of ups to be fair that has garnered them both uber cool and honoured them certain freeness from the critics to do what they wanted until all things went quite on the Stereolab front in 2010.
Instant Holograms On Metal Film is their first album in fifteen years and is both instantly recognizable and completely new. If anything Stereolab have always been a band that played with the head, their simplicity and at times childlike sound is deceptively complex and painfully concieved. This is a record that will delight fans of old and underlines that age, time and space are sometimes all that is needed to produce great work again.
